Overview

Back pain is a very common complaint that most people will experience at some point in their lives. By following a few simple instructions, 90% of people will get better within 4-6 weeks. However, if you have any of the following symptoms with your back pain you need to be seen by your provider:

  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain
  • Numbness or weakness into the legs
  • Failure to improve after 3-4 weeks
  • Back pain preceded by a specific injury

If none of these things applies to your back pain you can:

  • Stay active. Complete rest often makes the pain worse. However, you should avoid heavy lifting and activities that strain the back.
  • Use an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen. Remember to take it with food as stomach upset/irritation is its most common side effect.
  • You may use ice or heat to the painful area. Individuals often find that one or the other works best for them.

If you have tried all of these things for 2-3 weeks without improvement, if your symptoms are worsening or other concerning symptoms are occurring you can see a provider at UHCS for evaluation by making an appointment through My UHCS (see UHCS web site) or by calling 262-472-1300.
